Meet VJ Beachem
Hometown: Fort Wayne, IN
Class of 2017
In high school I was lucky enough to be recruited by schools from all across the country. In that process, Notre Dame always stood out to me. Coach Brey’s success was definitely a factor. But, the University’s emphasis on educating the “whole” student-athlete really stuck with me. I’ve always known that my education is going to play a vital role in my life.
That thought process remained true this past summer when I had the chance to attend the NBA combine. It was a great experience and I’m grateful that I went through it, but I always had the thought of graduating in the back of my head. At the end of the road, basketball is going to end and my life is going to continue. For the rest of my journey to be a success, I need an education, and there is no better place to get that than at the University of Notre Dame.
Since deciding to return to the University, I’ve been focused on growing personally on and off the court, as well as mentoring the younger guys on the team. The experience of adjusting to balancing school and athletics, while helping my team go to back-to-back Elite Eights has prepared me extremely well to be a leader.
There is no question in my mind that coming back was the best decision I’ve made. I’m going to walk across the stage in May with a degree from the University of Notre Dame and lifelong friendships. My last three years have been great and I’m looking forward to whatever is next in my journey. Whatever it may be, playing in the NBA, becoming an agent, or something else, I’m confident that my teammates, coaches, tutors, and professors have prepared me to succeed.
