Academic Life

First Year of Studies

The First Year of Studies (FYS) is the college to which all incoming students are admitted. Notre Dame’s first year students are required to complete the First Year Curriculum, which is an essential foundation in a liberal arts education, and an experience in a broad range of intellectual pursuits. Combining this carefully designed program of study with professional advising support, students discern their undergraduate major and obtain the core competencies needed to succeed in that field of study. The First Year of Studies is a hallmark program that allows students to successfully transition from home and high school to the new challenges and responsibilities of academic life at Notre Dame.
